BANBURY TOWN BADMINTON LEAGUE 22/1/2012
Middleton Cheney extended their unbeaten record this season and moved six points clear of Chipping Norton at the top of the mixed division three, after battling to a 5-4 victory over a rapidly improving, Brackley Town team. Calvin Burnett with Marcus Lesniak and Carla Campion with Kate Hardiman took the first two rubbers for Brackley but man of the match, Ray Chambers of Middleton, won his two mens rubbers, with Martin Hirons and Tony Butler which allied to a ladies win by Vicki Dunlop with Fay Barrington, saw Middleton go 3-2 ahead. Kate Hardiman and Sarah Marshall combined to win the final ladies rubber for Brackley Town, to level the match at 3-3. The mixed rubbers saw Middleton edge ahead through Martin Hirons and Vicki Dunlop only for Brackley Town to level through Calvin Burnett and Carla Campion. At this point Ray Chambers gained his man of the match status, remaining unbeaten by winning the crucial final mixed rubber with Helen Harman, to secure a 5-4 victory for Middleton. A serious threat to Middletonhowever, in the form of second placed and unbeaten, Chipping Norton, remains, and the forthcoming meetings between the two will almost certainly decide the destination of the title.
Feathers ‘A’ remain the dominant force at the top of the mens division one, after unbeaten displays by Chris Tustian with Jamie Archer and Stuart Quick with Steve Watkin set up a 7-2 success over Bicester ‘A’.
Brackley Town gained an impressive 4-2 victory over Feathers ‘B’ in the ladies division two, due mainly to a fine unbeaten display by Sarah Marshall, in partnerships with Carla Campion, Kate Hardiman and Sue Howe.
Cramic enjoyed a double success in the Knockout Cup, with both their ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams progressing through to the semi finals of this years competition. Cramic ‘B’ visited Marlborough ‘B’ and in a tense contest which hung in the balance right up to the final game on court, it was Cramic’s Ishtiaq Ahmad, Jo Chiappinelli, John Elsey, Jemma Ainsby, Michael Grigsby and Marjorie Morris, that ran out winners by 375 points to 362. Cramic ‘B’ will now face Feathers in their semi final. The Cramic ‘A’ team entertained Deddington and despite a battling display from the visitors, Cramic’s Steve Watkin, Lynda Blades, Roric Pennington, Elaine Gilkes, Scott Manley and Debbie Scragg, gained an early advantage in the match and gradually increased it to complete a win by 367 points to 324. The Cramic ‘A’ team will meet Marlborough ‘A’ in their semi final match.
